Red Lion comes down in Portland’s Lloyd District to make way for luxury boutique hotel

A steel skeleton is just about all that remains of the former Red Lion Hotel in the Lloyd District across from the Oregon Convention Center.

Construction crews have been gutting the building to make way for the Hotel Eastlund, which is being billed as a luxury boutique hotel that will open in May 2015.

A project of Seattle-based Grand Ventures Hotel LLC, the new hotel will have about 170 rooms, meeting space and two restaurants from Portland chef David Machado.

One, the Altabira City Tavern, will be a full-service restaurant with a spacious rooftop deck, fire pits and views of the Portland skyline and Willamette River. Machado will also open Citizen Baker adjacent to the hotel lobby.

The combination artisan bakery, gourmet coffee shop, and wine bar will serve handmade breads and pastries, as well as creative soups, salads and sandwiches seven days a week.

The new hotel, which was designed by Portland’s Holst Architecture, is one of 11 hotels that Grand Ventures has acquired and redeveloped over the past 25 years. The firm was also behind Hotel Modera in Portland and Seattle’s Hotel Andra and Hotel Deca.
