DESCRIPTION:Every Saturday and Sunday from March through Christmas Eve the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood transforms into a thriving arts and crafts open-air marketplace. Seeing the Market’s staff delegate booth spaces with precision each weekend for so many years\, most of the neighborhood has come to think of Portland Saturday Market (PSM) as a business like any other. But it certainly was not always that way\, and some surprising elements still lie at the core of this unusual non-profit operation. Portland Saturday Market was the brainchild of two women\, Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf. Both were artists living in the area who had sold at the Saturday Market in Eugene; their idea was to create a similar style of market in downtown Portland. Beginning in December 1973\, the two visited everyone they could think of in the city to sell their idea: an open-air market of all handmade food and craft items. It would be a win-win situation they insisted. DESCRIPTION:The Nike Hoop Summit\, an annual basketball game that pits top U.S. high school senior boys against a World Select Team comprised of elite international players who are 19 years old or younger\, will return to the Moda Center in Portland\, Oregon\, at 7 p.m. (PST) on Friday\, April 12. \nTickets for the 2019 Nike Hoop Summit will go on sale Thursday\, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. (PST). Courtside seats are available for $50\, and VIP Packages (including premier courtside seating) will be released in January. Lower bowl seating starts at $10. Applicable service charges apply. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com\, the Rose Quarter Box Office or by calling 800-745-3000. \n“We are excited to again hold the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland in 2019\,” said USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley. “The Portland community has been very supportive of this event\, which has been extremely competitive since we moved the game to Portland in 2008. We hope the community will continue to come out and support the 22nd edition of this very exciting event.” \nThe 2019 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team is expected to be announced in January\, and the U.S. athletes and coaches will be selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee. The 2019 World Select Team is expected to be announced in March and will draw players from FIBA Africa\, FIBA Americas\, FIBA Asia and FIBA Europe\, with approved sanction of FIBA\, the governing body of international basketball. \nOverall\, the USA holds a 14-7 series advantage in the Nike Hoop Summit\, however\, in 2018 the USA could not overcome icy shooting and an international record 60 rebounds and fell to the World Select Team 89-76. Darius Garland contributed 16 points and five assists\, and Quentin Grimes added 15 points\, six rebounds and four assists. \nIn 2017\, the USA held on for a 98-87 win that saw Michael Porter Jr. and Jarred Vanderbilt score 19 points apiece. \nThe Nike Hoop Summit has been held annually since 1995\, with the exception of 2001-2003. \nIn 1998 and 2004\, the Nike Hoop Summit was played in San Antonio\, Texas\, during the NCAA Final Four; in 1999\, the event was held in Tampa\, Florida; and in Indianapolis\, Indiana\, in 2000. From 2005-2007 the game was held in Memphis\, Tennessee\, and since 2008\, the Nike Hoop Summit has been played in Portland\, Oregon – where it has recorded the four largest crowds in event history. \nAn incredible 217 former USA or World Select Team members have been drafted by NBA teams\, including 14 players in the 2018 NBA Draft. \nTwelve Nike Hoop Summit alumni have been chosen as the No. 1 pick\, and 76 players have been selected among the first 10 picks. \nThe past nine No. 1 picks have been Nike Hoop Summit alumni\, including DeAndre Ayton (Bahamas) in 2018\, Markelle Fultz in 2017\, Ben Simmons (Australia) in 2016\, Karl-Anthony Towns (Dominican Republic) in 2015\, Andrew Wiggins (Canada) in 2014\, Anthony Bennett (Canada) in 2013\, Anthony Davis in 2012\, Kyrie Irving in 2011 and John Wall in 2010. \nIn 2014\, the first three picks were Nike Hoop Summit alumni (Andrew Wiggins\, Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid)\, which also happened in 2012 (Anthony Davis\, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal) and 2008 (Derrick Rose\, Michael Beasley and O.J. DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Society’s Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is a free concert open to the public and held over three days in mid-July at Cathedral Park at the base of the St. Johns bridge in the Cathedral Park neighborhood of Portland. Now in its 38th year\, the festival is the longest running jazz and blues festival west of the Mississippi River. The Festival is a major musical event in the heart of summer for the Portland Metro area\, and features the region’s best local jazz and blues musicians. It also fosters cooperation and pride in the north Portland neighborhoods of Cathedral Park and St. Johns\, and recognizes and promotes the community’s local businesses. \nThe Festival begins Friday night with dynamic Blues\, R&B\, and Soul. Saturday and Sunday will feature multiple styles of Jazz in all their glory. The stage is situated in a natural amphitheater with a backdrop of the beautiful Willamette River to the west and the mighty St Johns Bridge overhead. The lush\, green\, and beautifully-maintained festival grounds are the perfect place to bring a picnic or to purchase delicious offerings available from our food vendors. You are welcome to spread a blanket or set up low-profile beach chairs in the grassy bowl in front of the stage. \nCelebrating Cathedral Park and the surrounding community is a major focus of this Festival. Neighborhood groups will have information booths promoting local businesses and philanthropic organizations. \nThe Jazz Society recognizes the growing hunger problem in our area\, so a Food Drive to benefit area food banks is an integral part of the Festival. Barrels to collect donated non-perishable food items will be placed throughout the grounds. \nCity regulations prohibit attendees from drinking alcohol in the park open area. However\, alcohol may be enjoyed by adults 21-and-over in our shady Beer Garden with a full view of the stage. DESCRIPTION:In 1998\, PDX Pop listserv began in true DIY fashion when a few dozen Portland musicians\, fans\, and writers started a listserv that focused on promoting and discussing the local music scene. In ways it mirrored the collaborative nature of Portland’s music scene; one where cooperation trumped competition and motivation spurred from the question\, “How big can this thing get?” \nThis question inspired the creation of PDX Pop Now! when 14 people envisioned local music emboldened by local recognition\, and were driven to ignite it. The idea: that Portland’s self-sustained scene had reached a level deserving of recognition\, discovery\, enhancement\, stimulation\, participation\, accessibility and—most importantly—celebration! Thus\, the PDX Pop Now! music festival was born in 2004. \nAfter producing the third-annual PDX Pop Now! festival\, these volunteers decided to turn their labor of love into a lasting legacy. In July of 2007\, PDX POP Now! became a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. \nNow\, driven by a dedicated Board of Directors and more than 200 volunteers\, we are committed to celebrating\, promoting and sustaining Portland’s vital and diverse music community. In harmony with this mission\, we also work to connect this diverse music community to the general public through our outreach efforts. \nWhat’s more\, PDX Pop Now! works to fulfill this mission in a democratic and accessible way. Often\, our productions are curated through a public nomination process and volunteer voting committees\, held free of charge and are open to all-ages. By design\, these efforts create an enfranchising\, welcoming and diverse environment that’s more likely to amplify participation\, dynamism and vitality throughout Portland’s music scene. \nEach year\, our stellar lineup of grassroots events works toward this end.
