Love at Hotel Eastlund
Northwest Couple Celebrates Anniversary on Our Rooftop
Candice and her husband Craig celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary at Altabira City Tavern on the rooftop of Hotel Eastlund. Candice tagged us on Facebook and allowed us to share the story of how they chose Altabira for this romantic celebration.
“For our 42nd wedding anniversary, my husband Craig and I decided we wanted to go somewhere we went in the ’70s. Remember the Top of the Cosmo? We used to go there with my sister and Craig’s brother, (our matron of honor and best man). Well, it’s now the Altabira City Tavern on the rooftop of Hotel Eastlund. They just opened last Monday night. Fun atmosphere. It was a delightful way to celebrate the evening after a full day’s work.
The Altabira staff was holding a perfect table for us inside by the window with a wonderful view of downtown Portland, but we couldn’t resist the chance to enjoy the inviting rooftop patio on a warm summer night.
I had the salmon with tomato and roasted corn salsa, which was delicious. Craig had the beef brisket with tangy coleslaw and black beans. It was tender and good as well. Happy hour begins up there on July 1.
Thanks so much for a memorable evening. Feeling in love at Hotel Eastlund. We’ll be back!”
Thank YOU, Candice. We were so touched by your positive and historic story, we did a little research about Top of the Cosmo. According to a Blog by Richard Engeman, Top of the Cosmo was affiliated with Portland’s Cosmopolitan Hotel during the 1960’s. Engeman, who heads Oregon Rediviva, a public history research and writing company, writes:
“In December 1962, the Cosmopolitan Motor Hotel opened, plonked sort of halfway between the new Lloyd Center shopping mall and the new Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It boasted a rooftop dining room touted as “Top of the Cosmo,”
