Family Holiday Activities in Portland
When it comes to holiday family fun, Portland is second to none. Whether you’re in town for a holiday getaway or looking to turn business travel into a family trip, our luxury Portland hotel has created a list of activities to make your stay memorable for the whole family. From Halloween hoopla and Thanksgiving traditions to Christmas celebrations and more, these events are worth a trip Portland:
The Spirit of Halloweentown (until October 31st)
Inspired by Disney Channel’s hit TV movie, Halloweentown, this family festival captures the chills and thrills of the classic kid’s film with trick-or-treating, costume contests, and haunted town tours all month long. The event is located just 28 miles from Portland in the town where the movie was filmed in 1998 – St. Helens, Oregon.
Festive Light Displays (starting in November)
Portland seems to get brighter as the days get darker, thanks to the spectacular light displays throughout the holiday season. For a one-of-a-kind zoo experience, visit ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo to see the animals, listen to live music, ride the lighted train, and enjoy a bite to eat from local food carts. Let your little ones ride the carousel or say hello to Santa all while enjoying a dazzling display of lights! If your kids would like to pet animals too, bring them to the petting zoo at the Christmas Festival of Lights and enjoy holiday music from the region’s top choirs at the largest Christmas choral festival in the world! From the Christmas Ship Parade to the Holiday Tree lighting, each light display in Portland has a unique angle and keeps the city shining brightly in winter.
The Amazing Bubble Show (November 27th)
Treat the family to a spectacular show by ‘The Amazing Bubble Man’ the morning after Thanksgiving. Combining science and art, Louis Pearl puts on a mesmerizing show of bubble tricks and comedy to music. He creates square bubbles, bubbles within bubbles, human-sized bubbles, bubble tornados and more. See it to believe it – you may find yourself just as amazed as your children!
Hop Aboard the Holiday Express (multiple dates in November & December)
Let Santa and his elves help you and your family get in the holiday spirit with a train ride on the Holiday Express! Enjoy a round-trip ride on the Oregon Pacific Railroad in vintage trail cars powered by one of Portland’s famous steam locomotives. Daytime trips offer a chance to see the city’s scenery and wildlife in a winter wonderland, while evening trips showcase the train decorated with lights!
Christmas Bazaar (November 23rd -25th & Nov. 30th- Dec. 2nd)
What better place to do your holiday shopping than at the largest Christmas Bazaar in America? This 33-year-old Portland holiday tradition is free to children under 12, and just $3 for those under 17. You’ll find handmade quilts and clothing items, customized ornaments, furniture, fudge, pickled food, children’s books and more!
