Springtime Hikes Near Portland

It’s time to shake off that Pacific Northwest rain and hit the trail! As springtime rolls around, hiking season is in full bloom and there are plenty of spots to enjoy Oregon’s gorgeous wildflowers and lush scenery just a short distance from our Portland hotel. Read below for a list of some of our recommended spring hikes in the Portland area.

  1. Dogwood Trail. Portland’s own urban wilderness, Dogwood Trail, is located in Forest Park and is one of Portland’s most popular hiking routes (for good reason!). While it’s just two-miles round trip, this trail is bound to get your heart pumping with its steep elevation gain and switchbacks. If you’re really feeling adventurous, you can extend your hike to include the nearby Wild Cherry Loop (8-miles).
  2. Catherine Creek. The Columbia Gorge’s Catherine Creek offers a variety of hikes ideal for springtime. Here, you’ll find breathtaking views of the Columbia River and Mount Hood, but the real treasures along this trail are the abundant wildflowers. Over 90 species of blossoms decorate the landscape of rock, grasslands and oak forests. Whether you choose the easy .25-mile stroll to an outlook area or the moderately difficult 1.25-mile loop to take in more beauty, you won’t be disappointed.
  3. Lacamas Park. Maybe waterfalls are more your thing? Lacamas Lake Park has the perfect routes for hikers (and cyclers!) of any skill-level with its diverse network of multipurpose trails. The Lacamas Heritage Trail is a highlight with its incredible rock formations and seasonal waterfalls. For bonus points, head to the neighboring Heritage Park for a perfect post-hike picnic.
  4. Wildwood Recreation Area. If you’re craving a walk on the wild side, head to Wildwood Recreation Area. Located along the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway, this 550-acre outdoor haven is a great place to take in the majesty of Oregon’s tallest peak. Beginners can hang take a leisurely loop on the Cascade Streamwatch Trail, while more advanced hikers can take on the steep climb up the Boulder Ridge Trail.
